Please consider the information below MANDATORY Reading for the July 25th Stoneman Sprint, Abe’s Olympic and Route 66 Half Distance Triathlons.

Remember this is all new to everyone to please be patient while understanding everyone is doing their best to make these races happen but we need your help to keep everyone safe.

The information directly below is a summary of the Best Practices Plan being implemented for race day.

Best Practices

Safe Return to Racing Event Guidelines

 

After more than 14 years safely hosting the Stoneman Sprint, Abe’s Olympic and the Route 66 Half Distance Triathlons; extraordinary steps and precaution’s will be implemented to keep the event safe for the planned July 25th Race Date at Lake Springfield Beach House.

These standards and precautions have been developed from the World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control, the Ironman Global Medical Advisory Board, medical experts from around the world and USAT (USA Triathlon, subsidiary of US Olympic Committee).

In order for the following event and plan to occur we must have received direction from the Governor and be in Phase 4.

Assuming we are in Phase 4 we can fall under the governors gathering limits of less than 50 people while proceeding with a modified race day plan based on guidelines we must follow under USA Triathlon for insurance and liability issues.

We are to discourage any friends and family from attending, only racers and very limited volunteers are allowed and no group gatherings at all before or after event to keep under group size limits

It’s the industries understanding as long as we keep people well dispersed we can continue since the possible limit in one spot is the deciding factor, not total count of people spread out over a 70.3 mile course and 3 different races with different start times will help spread people out, thus adhering to social distancing and staying under total limits.

Only 1 or 2 volunteers at water stops and on roads

All race support staff must all use gloves and masks and practice social distancing

Racers are to wear masks while on site but not while racing unless they choose to race with a mask

The race will provide masks to all racers, gloves will be available for racers if wanted

Bigger transition with more space between bikes and people

No race day pre race talks, information provided to racer before event through email

Continual announcements about proper spacing and no groups forming

Site signage reminding about Social Distancing and New Rules for Race Day

No packet pickup as before, only with limited interactions between people while maintaining social distancing

No awards ceremony, pick up their own or mailed

Racers pick up their own medal if applicable and dispose of timing chip when finished

Food if provided is pre-packaged and given to go

Hand washing stations set up and sanitizer all over venue

More time between race starts but same race duration overall so police times needed will not change very much if at all

More signage about social distancing, traffic flows in transition and hand washing

Porta pots spread farther apart, no showers

We have assurance Covid 19 liability is covered under our insurance policy so we are all protected for the event if a claim would occur and additional insureds can be added.

That’s a high level summary since things are changing daily and we hope this event can occur but bottom line is the safety and health of all involved.

While Tri Harder will do everything within our control to ensure a safe race we must ask all racers to read, understand and follow the Self Reliance Tips designed to help you be self reliant on race day.

These are skills every athlete should possess to assure their personal safety while training and their ultimate success on race day.

The Key to safe racing for all is Self Reliance, you must be healthy, prepared and ready for a new experience which will demand more from you and less from others.

Enhanced Hygiene

  • Hand sanitizer, hand washing stations and disinfectant wipes will be readily available around our race venues. Cleaning of common venue areas will be enhanced.
  • Staff and volunteers will be provided with face coverings and gloves to be used while working in all athlete-facing areas. Athletes will be provided with face coverings at packet pick-up, and we expect that athletes will wear a face covering around our event venues.

Screening & Education

  • Appropriate personal health, personal hygiene and safe support education and training will be provided for staff and volunteers in necessary functional areas. This includes the future expansion of the IRONMAN Smart Program to provide Volunteer Smart™ guidelines for volunteers.
  • Athletes and volunteers will be required to fill out a pre-race health questionnaire.
  • Additionally, in many venues no-touch body temperature screening will be instituted. Per World Health Organization guidelines, individuals with a body temperature greater than 100.4° Fahrenheit, or 38° Celsius will not be allowed to race, volunteer or work.

Density Reduction

  • We will institute measures to increase space for athletes and supporting personnel in areas such as swim start, transition, and finish line.
  • Modification or elimination of non-essential race services such as banquets may also occur.

Touchpoint Minimization

  • We will reduce or remove touchpoints and points of interaction between staff, participants, and volunteers without compromising event safety and security, through redesign and reconfiguration of event village areas as well as race course zones such as aid stations.
  • Aid stations will be reconfigured to minimize both athlete-to-volunteer and athlete-to-athlete contact.

Athlete Self-Reliance

  • Through the Athlete Smart™ program, athletes will be empowered to determine their individual level of self-reliance to further minimize interaction and touchpoints with race officials and volunteers.
  • Athletes will be encouraged to Race Smart™ by carrying nutrition and hydration while utilizing items such as hydration vests and event offered special needs stations.
  • Athletes should review and embrace Athlete Smart Self-Reliance Tips.

Collectively, the implementation of these changes will eliminate up to 90% of total touchpoints and interactions for our athletes.

In summary we believe that the City of Springfield is ready to welcome us back and we will be able to craft a race experience for all that fits within our communities parameters while providing much needed stress reduction and healthy options for our racers during these troubled times.

We look forward to hosting the Triathlons on July 25th at the Lake Springfield Beach House and Boat Ramp.
